HOW TO PACK DELICATE ITEMS FOR A MOVE
Making sure everything gets safely from A to B during a move can be a challenge. When it comes to items like televisions, picture frames, dishes, keepsakes, and other sentimental items, it can become worrisome to pack them away with the rest of your belongings.
Luckily, you can take a few extra precautions to avoid items breaking or getting damaged in a move. Our professional movers have helped hundreds of customers pack up their prized possessions, so we are sharing tips to master packing fragile items for your next move.
BUY NEW PACKING SUPPLIES, ESPECIALLY BOXES
Older boxes that have been used already may not be as firm or reliable. If you can, invest in new boxes, which you can purchase directly from Eager Beaver Moving & Storage. We have a variety of boxes that have specific purposes, especially for your fragile items!
GET MORE PACKING SUPPLIES THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED
It is better to be overprepared than underprepared. Always provide yourself with more than you think you will need. Packing up your home can add up with items quite quickly. Having the correct number of boxes and supplies is a great way to prepare and not search for more supplies.
START PACKING EARLY
If you have many fragile items to pack, try to pack these items first so you can spend more time making sure they are secure.
TAPE YOUR BOXES ON THE TOP & BOTTOM
There’s nothing worse than having a box break open from the bottom while you’re carrying it. Putting packing tape on the bottom is far more secure than a simple fold, especially for heavy items. This simple step will ensure the safety of your packed items.
PACK FRAGILE ITEMS SEPARATELY AND IN SMALL, WELL-MARKED BOXES
Keeping your fragile items separate helps ensure your movers give them extra care on moving days. Make sure that you mark the boxes as “Fragile” and keep them separate from the rest of your boxes. This will tell your movers that those boxes are meant to be handled with extra care, and you can worry less about them. Additionally, marking boxes with arrows to indicate which side they are to be “up” will ensure they don’t get turned over while being moved.
PACK LIGHT ITEMS AT THE TOP AND HEAVY ITEMS AT THE BOTTOM OF EACH BOX
Just like you wouldn’t squish your bread in the grocery bag, don’t squish your lighter items underneath the heavier packed items.
USE PACKING PAPER FOR HEAVY ITEMS
If you have a lot of heavy, fragile items (such as dishes), packing paper is a great option. Pack items tightly in the box, so there isn’t room for them to move around, also making sure to put extra paper in the box to prevent spaces in the box to keep them stable as they are transported.
USE BUBBLE WRAP FOR VERY LIGHT, FRAGILE ITEMS
This can include things such as Christmas ornaments, small keepsakes, and glassware. Wrap items individually with bubble wrap and secure with a piece of tape, use the same method in the box with extra paper to prevent spaces and keep them stable!
USE MOVING BLANKETS TO SEPARATE ITEMS – ESPECIALLY LARGE ITEMS LIKE FURNITURE
The Eager Beaver moving team uses specialty blankets and other materials to secure your belongings in our moving trucks. Moving blankets are thick coverings used to protect large items when moving. Movers wrap and cover vulnerable or fragile pieces of furniture with these specialty blankets to prevent damage to the item while it’s being moved in and out of your home.
KEEP FRAGILE ITEMS SEPARATE FROM THE REST OF YOUR BELONGINGS
We like to keep smaller, fragile belongings upfront in the moving truck or a separate area in the back of the truck. It’s also important to tie down your items in the moving truck to guarantee nothing bumps out of place while driving. If you’re completing long-distance moving, it’s always ideal to stop and check every few hours to ensure all your straps are remaining tight.
